OB/GYN – REGISTERED NURSE
Job Summary
The Staff Nurse provides clinical care to and supports the recovery of patients suffering from acute
and long-term illnesses, diseases or those requiring surgery. The post holder must have the ability to
work effectively both independently and within a multi-disciplinary/ multi-cultural team to deliver
the highest quality of care.
The post has the following key elements:
- Coordinate and provide direct patient care within the scope of RN license.
- Support the development of junior colleagues and seek opportunities to develop their own practice.
- May oversee clinical care of other personnel including care assistants.
- Take charge of the ward when requested in the absence of senior staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical
- Practice in accordance with the professional, ethical and legal framework for nursing with emphasis on the specific needs of patients in OB/Gyn.
- Assess the patient’s care needs and plan, implement and evaluate programs of care that reflect the needs of patients and their significant others.
- Undertake nursing interventions based on best available evidence.
- Take appropriate action in relation to all emergencies and control of infection issues within the sphere of responsibility.
- Ensure that essential information regarding the patient’s condition and progress is recorded by self and team in accordance with A guidelines.
- Take immediate and appropriate action in relation to adverse incident reporting utilizing the hospital incident reporting system and report the same according to AH policies.
- Ensure environmental cleanliness of care setting and that own practice and that of all colleagues within care setting reflects the AH Infection Control Policies & Procedures.
- Undertake other clinical activities as designated by the Ward Manager or their designee.
Management
- Act as a role model and assist in providing professional support to junior colleagues, learners and non-registered clinical support staff within the nursing environment.
- Provide professional support to senior staff.
- Ensure all quality initiatives within the care environment are integrated into clinical practice and that the highest standards of care are maintained.
- Develop effective communications between all members of staff, patients and relatives.
- Identify and assess potential risks in work activities and to report identified risks to appropriate person.
- Ensure all medical devices within care settings are maintained in safe working order and are used in compliance with the manufacturer’s instructions and AH policies.
- Take charge of the ward in the absence of the Ward Manager when requested.
- At all times provide a caring service and to treat those with whom they come into contact in a courteous and respectful manner.
- Carry out their duties and responsibilities in a manner which assures the safety of patients, general public, other staff and self.
- Demonstrate their commitment by their regular attendance and the efficient completion of all tasks allocated to them and any other task as assigned.
- Adhere to AH Policies and security policies throughout the course of employment.
Staff Development
- Act as a role model and ensure the provision of a learning environment.
- Assist Ward Manager to identify educational needs of staff, develop programs to meet these needs and help towards their professional development.
- Actively participate in staff development and performance review.
- Assist the Ward/Unit Manager in the effective implementation of the departmental induction programs.
Teaching
- Provide formal and informal teaching in both classroom and clinical setting as requested.
- Prepare and provide learning materials for use within the clinical area as requested.
Health & Safety
- Promote adherence to Health & Safety Policies
- Cooperate with the organization in ensuring that statutory regulations, codes of practice and other applicable health & safety rules are adhered to.
Quality and Accreditation
- Support the efforts of the AH in achieving accreditation. Adhere to all defined standards, processes, policies and procedures and cooperate fully with every initiative to secure accreditation.
- Participate in the development of policies or in change management activities.
Professional Development
- Participate in personal objective setting and review (Personal Action Planning), including the creation of a personal development plan. The post holder should take every reasonable opportunity to maintain and improve their professional knowledge and competence.

Job Requirements
Education
- B. Sc. in Nursing or equivalent.
- Nursing Registration with the relevant Nursing Council.
- Computer literate.
- Evidence of post registration midwifery qualification an advantage.
- Evidence of continuous education.
Experience
- RN3 0-2 years experience in Medical / Surgical nursing with evidence of experience in OB/Gyn nursing
- RN2 2-4 years experience in Medical / Surgical nursing with evidence of experience in OB/Gyn nursing
- RN1 Minimum of 4 years experience in Medical / Surgical nursing with evidence of experience in OB/Gyn nursing
